How to Pass the Arizona Driving Test
Arizona road tests are administered by the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). You need 30 supervised hours before testing — 10 at night. Arizona’s 30-hour total requirement is among the lowest in the country.
What the test covers
Arizona road tests run on public streets near the MVD office. The examiner scores you on a standard form over about 15-20 minutes.
Skills tested:
- Left and right turns at intersections
- Stopping at signs and signals
- Lane changes
- Parallel parking at most locations
- Backing
- Speed management
- Following distance
- Mirror and observation habits
What gets people failed
Not stopping at stop signs. Arizona examiners are strict about full stops. Wheels must stop completely before proceeding. Rolling through at low speed is a deduction.
Parallel parking errors. Hitting cones, mounting the curb, or ending up too far from the curb are the common failure points. Many MVD locations test this.
Blind spot checks. Signal, check mirror, turn head for blind spot, then change lanes. The head turn is what examiners watch for. Skipping it is a consistent deduction.
Right-of-way errors. Arizona has a lot of uncontrolled intersections and multi-lane roads. Failing to yield to traffic already in a lane, or to pedestrians in crosswalks, are both heavily penalized.
Speed. Arizona residential areas default to 25 mph. Exceeding it on test day costs points.
Third-party testing
Arizona allows approved third-party driver training companies to administer the road test. Some driving schools offer this. It can mean shorter wait times than an MVD office. The license outcome is the same.
Before the test
Arizona requires 30 hours including 10 at night. Permit age is 15 and a half. Hold period is 6 months.
Bring:
- Valid Arizona learner’s permit
- Driving log showing 30 hours (10 night)
- Vehicle registration and current insurance
- Parent or guardian if under 18
Tracking your hours
Arizona uses a sunset-to-sunrise definition for night hours. Phoenix sunset ranges from around 5:30 PM in December to 7:30 PM in June.
Moda tracks Arizona hours and applies sunset for your location. Download on the App Store
