Frequently Asked Questions

How Moda works, what it costs, and how it compares.

What is Moda?

Moda is an iOS app that tracks supervised driving hours for teens with learner's permits. It automatically logs the date, time, duration, whether it was day or night, weather conditions, and who supervised the drive. When your teen has completed their required hours, Moda generates the PDF log your state DMV requires.

Does Moda work in my state?

Yes. Moda supports all 50 US states plus Washington DC. Every state has different rules — total hours required, night hours, highway hours, permit age requirements. Moda knows them all and tracks your teen's progress toward each specific requirement.

How much does Moda cost?

Moda costs $4.99 one time. No subscription, no monthly fee, no annual renewal, no ads. You pay once and own it forever, including all future updates.

What does automatic night detection mean?

Instead of using a fixed time like "9 PM," Moda calculates actual sunset and sunrise times for your GPS location on the specific date you drove. Any drive that overlaps with the time between sunset and sunrise counts toward night hours. This is important because sunset can vary by more than 4 hours between summer and winter at the same location.

Which states have official DMV form exports?

Moda auto-fills the official DMV driving log form for Indiana (BMV 2009), North Carolina (DL-180C), New Jersey (MVC BA-208), Nevada (DMV 21), New York (MV-262), Ohio (BMV 2118), and Pennsylvania (DL-180). For all other states, Moda generates a comprehensive driving log PDF with all session details.

Can both parents log driving sessions?

Yes. Family linking lets a parent generate a 6-digit code in the app. The teen enters it once. After that, any parent or supervisor can log sessions from their own phone. All sessions go into one combined log that counts toward the teen's total. Up to 6 supervisors can be linked to one teen's account.

How does the Live Activity work?

When a driving session is running, Moda displays a Live Activity on the iPhone's lock screen showing elapsed time, whether it's day or night, and the supervisor's name. On iPhones with a Dynamic Island, the session appears there too. This means teens never need to unlock their phone to check progress during a drive.

Does Moda track where we drove?

GPS coordinates never leave the device. Routes and waypoints are held in memory only during the active session, then deleted. Moda syncs only aggregate data to the cloud (like total miles driven today) — not location traces, not route history, not GPS coordinates. No third party ever sees where your teen drove.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Sessions save locally on the device first. If there's no signal during a drive, everything still works. Sessions sync to the cloud when connectivity comes back. The app never fails mid-session because of a lost connection.

How does Moda compare to LogIt (Student Driving Logger)?

LogIt tracks driving hours but requires manual input for night and weather conditions. Moda detects both automatically. Moda also includes family linking where multiple supervisors log independently, DMV form auto-fill for 7 states, and a Live Activity lock screen timer. LogIt does not have these features.

How does Moda compare to Teen Driving Log?

Teen Driving Log (the NerdsGeeksGurus app) is one of the older apps in this category. It does basic time and date logging but lacks automatic night detection, automatic weather tracking, family linking where both parents log independently, and DMV form exports. Moda handles all of these automatically.

How does Moda compare to RoadReady?

RoadReady is a free app backed by AAA. It has basic hour tracking. Night and weather must be tagged manually. There are no official DMV form exports and no automatic family syncing. Moda costs $4.99 one-time but does the manual work automatically and generates the actual state DMV form.

Is Moda available on Android?

Not yet. Moda is currently iOS only, requiring iOS 18 or later. Android support is being evaluated for a future version.

What happens when my teen reaches 100% of their required hours?

Moda displays a milestone celebration. The app tracks progress at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% with milestone alerts. At 100%, you can export the final DMV log from the app.

Can I edit a session after saving it?

Yes. Sessions can be edited after saving. You can change the start time, end time, weather condition, road type, and supervisor. You can also add sessions manually for drives you forgot to log in real time.
