Georgia’s road test is administered by the Department of Driver Services (DDS). You need 40 supervised hours before testing — 6 of those must be at night. Georgia requires a 12-month permit hold for drivers under 18.

Georgia road tests run on public streets near the DDS Customer Service Center. You’ll typically spend 15-20 minutes driving with an examiner.

What gets people failed

Not coming to a complete stop. Georgia examiners are consistent about this. The most common reason people fail their road test in Georgia is rolling through stop signs. Wheels must stop fully. Practice this until it’s automatic.

Right-of-way errors. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left, and failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, are both heavily penalized in Georgia.

Parallel parking. Hitting cones, ending up too far from the curb, or using excessive maneuvers to get in are common issues. Not every DDS location tests parallel parking, but many do. Assume yours will.

Lane positioning. Drifting toward the center line on straight roads, and taking turns too wide, are consistent deductions.

Speed. Residential speed limits are typically 25 mph. Going 5-10 over feels normal and loses points.

Before the test

Georgia has a 12-month permit hold, one of the longer requirements. You can’t shorten it. Use the time: 40 hours is a lower requirement than most states, and a teen with more than 40 real hours passes at a meaningfully higher rate.
