How to Pass the Kentucky Driving Test
Kentucky road tests are administered by the Transportation Cabinet. You need 60 supervised hours before testing — 10 at night. The permit must be held for at least 6 months.
What the test covers
Kentucky road tests run on public streets near the Circuit Court Clerk’s office or testing location. Tests last about 15-20 minutes.
Skills tested:
- Left and right turns at intersections
- Stopping at signs and signals
- Lane changes
- Parallel parking at most locations
- Backing
- Speed management
- Following distance
- Mirror and observation habits
What gets people failed
Not stopping fully at stop signs. Full stop, wheels completely stopped. Rolling through at any speed is a deduction.
Parallel parking. Hitting markers or the curb, or ending up more than 12 inches from the curb, are common failures.
Blind spot checks. Every lane change: signal, check mirror, turn head to check blind spot, then move. Examiners watch for the head turn specifically.
Turning into the wrong lane. Left turns go to the leftmost available lane, right turns to the rightmost. Swinging wide is a consistent deduction.
Speed. Kentucky residential streets are typically 25-35 mph. Stay at or under the posted limit throughout the test.
Before the test
Kentucky requires 60 hours, 10 at night. The 6-month hold starts from permit issuance.
Bring:
- Valid Kentucky learner’s permit
- Driving log showing 60 hours (10 night)
- Vehicle registration and current insurance
- Parent or guardian if under 18
