How to Pass the Massachusetts Driving Test
Massachusetts road tests are administered by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). You need 40 supervised hours before you can test. Massachusetts is one of the few states with no night driving hour requirement — the 40 hours can all be daytime.
What the test covers
Massachusetts road tests run on public streets near the RMV location. The examiner scores you on a standard form. Typical duration is 15-20 minutes.
Skills tested:
- Left and right turns at intersections
- Stopping at signs and signals
- Lane changes
- Parallel parking
- Backing in a straight line
- Speed management
- Following distance
- Mirror and observation habits
Massachusetts does test parallel parking.
What gets people failed
Rolling through stop signs. The most common road test failure in Massachusetts. Complete stop means wheels fully stopped, not slowing to near-zero.
Parallel parking. Massachusetts allows three attempts. Hitting a cone or marker, mounting the curb, or taking more than three attempts to complete the park are common failures. You don’t need to be perfectly centered — you need to end up within 12 inches of the curb, not touching any markers.
Not checking mirrors and blind spots. Examiners watch for head movement during lane changes. Signal, check your mirror, turn your head for the blind spot, then move. Do this every time without skipping steps.
Turning into the wrong lane. Left turns into the leftmost available lane, right turns into the rightmost. Wide turns that drift into center lanes or oncoming lanes are consistent deductions.
Speed on residential streets. 25 mph residential default. Many new drivers go 30 without thinking about it. On test day, watch the speed.
No night hour requirement
Massachusetts stands out: 40 hours of practice with no specific night hour minimum. You can log all 40 hours in daylight. That said, driving at night is a different skill and new drivers who’ve never done it are at a disadvantage once they have their license. Use some of the permit period to practice at night even though it’s not required.
Before the test
Bring:
- Valid Massachusetts learner’s permit (held at least 6 months)
- Completed driving log showing 40 hours
- Vehicle registration and current insurance
- Parent or guardian if under 18
