How to Pass the New Jersey Driving Test
New Jersey road tests are administered by the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). You need 50 supervised hours before testing — 10 at night. You must also present Form BA-208, the Supervised Driving Log, which the MVC examiner checks before you start.
Form BA-208
New Jersey requires the BA-208 form at the road test counter. You don’t present it when you arrive at the test — you present it before the road test begins. Without it, or without the correct hours logged, you don’t test that day.
Get Form BA-208 from any MVC agency or the NJ MVC website. It must show 50 hours with at least 10 at night, signed by a parent or guardian.
What the test covers
NJ road tests run on public streets near the MVC location. Typical test duration is 15-20 minutes.
Skills tested:
- Left and right turns at intersections
- Stopping at signs and traffic signals
- Lane changes
- Parallel parking
- Backing
- Speed management
- Following distance
- Mirror and observation habits
New Jersey tests parallel parking.
What gets people failed
Not stopping fully at stop signs. Most common failure. Wheels must stop completely. Rolling through even at low speed is a deduction.
Parallel parking. New Jersey examiners are consistent about parallel parking errors. Hitting markers or the curb, ending up too far from the curb, or using excessive attempts are all penalized.
Failure to yield. Right-of-way errors at intersections, especially failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, carry heavy deductions.
Blind spot checks. Signal, mirror, head turn for blind spot, then move. The head turn is required. Examiners watch for it.
Speed. Residential speed limits vary in NJ, often 25-35 mph. Go with traffic and stay at or below the posted limit.
Before the test
New Jersey’s permit age is 16. The permit must be held for at least 6 months.
Bring:
- Valid NJ learner’s permit
- Form BA-208 showing 50 hours (10 night), signed
- Vehicle registration and current insurance
- Parent or guardian if under 18
Tracking your hours
New Jersey’s Form BA-208 requires the day/night split to be recorded. Tracking them separately from the start is the only way to fill out the form accurately.
Moda tracks NJ hours, splits day vs. night automatically, and exports a log formatted for the BA-208. Download on the App Store
