How to Pass the South Carolina Driving Test
South Carolina road tests are administered by the DMV. You need 40 supervised hours before testing — 10 at night. The permit hold period is 6 months.
What the test covers
South Carolina road tests run on public streets near the DMV office. Tests last about 15-20 minutes.
Skills tested:
- Left and right turns at intersections
- Stopping at signs and signals
- Lane changes
- Parallel parking at most locations
- Backing
- Speed management
- Following distance
- Mirror and observation habits
What gets people failed
Not stopping fully at stop signs. Full stop, wheels completely stopped. Rolling through is the most common road test failure in South Carolina.
Parallel parking. Hitting cones or the curb, or ending up too far from the curb, are common failure points.
Not checking blind spots. Signal, mirror, head turn to check the blind spot, then move. Examiners watch for the head turn on every lane change.
Turning into the wrong lane. Left turns go to the leftmost lane, right turns to the rightmost. Drifting wide is a consistent deduction.
Speed. South Carolina residential streets are typically 25-30 mph. Stay at or below the posted limit.
Before the test
South Carolina requires 40 hours and 10 night hours. The 6-month hold starts from permit issuance.
Bring:
- Valid South Carolina learner’s permit
- Driving log showing 40 hours (10 night)
- Vehicle registration and current insurance
- Parent or guardian if under 18
