How to Pass the Utah Driving Test

Utah road tests are administered by the Driver License Division (DLD). You need 40 supervised hours before testing — 10 at night. The permit hold is 6 months.

What the test covers

Utah road tests run on public streets near the DLD office. Tests typically last 15-20 minutes.

Skills tested:

  • Left and right turns at intersections
  • Stopping at signs and signals
  • Lane changes
  • Parallel parking at most locations
  • Backing
  • Speed management
  • Following distance
  • Mirror and observation habits

What gets people failed

Not stopping fully at stop signs. Complete stop, wheels stopped. Rolling through is the most common failure in Utah road tests.

Parallel parking. Hitting cones, mounting the curb, or ending up far from the curb are common failure points. Practice it before the test.

Blind spot checks. Signal, mirror, head turn for the blind spot, then change lanes. Examiners watch for the head turn. Missing it is a deduction.

Turning into the wrong lane. Left turns to the leftmost lane, right turns to the rightmost. Wide turns that drift are a consistent deduction.

Speed. Utah residential streets are typically 25 mph. Stay at or under the limit throughout the test.

Utah weather and driving conditions

Utah’s geography creates varied driving conditions. Salt Lake City gets winter snow. The valleys can have serious inversion fog. If your permit period spans winter, practice in those conditions. Driving in reduced visibility or on slick roads during the permit period makes the license test in clear conditions much easier.

Before the test

Bring:

  • Valid Utah learner’s permit
  • Driving log showing 40 hours (10 night)
  • Vehicle registration and current insurance
  • Parent or guardian if under 18

Tracking your hours

Utah’s night definition is sunset to sunrise. Salt Lake City sunset in December is around 5:00 PM.
