Is Driver's Ed Required in Mississippi?

Driver’s ed is required in Mississippi. The state won’t issue a license to anyone under 18 who hasn’t finished an approved program.

What the requirement looks like

If you’re under 18, you need a state-approved course. That typically means 30+ hours of classroom work and several hours of in-car instruction with a licensed teacher. Online courses count in many cases, but check with your local DMV to make sure the program you pick is on the approved list.

No specific supervised driving hours required. Driver education required for under 18.

Supervised driving hours

Mississippi doesn’t set a specific number of supervised practice hours. But driver’s ed alone won’t make you a safe driver. Most safety experts recommend at least 50 hours of practice before taking the road test. The course gives you a foundation. Practice with a parent or guardian builds real-world experience on top of it.
