Do You Need Driver's Ed in Nebraska?
Driver’s ed isn’t required in Nebraska. You can go straight to the permit process without taking a formal course.
What driver’s ed covers
A typical program includes traffic law basics, road sign identification, right-of-way rules, and hazard awareness. Most also cover distracted driving, impaired driving, and what to do during a traffic stop. The in-car portion (when included) focuses on vehicle control, parking, lane changes, and highway merging. Programs run $200 to $800 depending on your area and whether they include behind-the-wheel hours.
The actual requirements
Driver’s ed is off the table, but Nebraska still wants 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night. Your supervisor needs to be at least 21 with a valid license. Permit age starts at 15.

Why families still take driver’s ed
Even without a legal mandate, a driver’s ed course can pay for itself. Insurance discounts for course completion range from 5% to 15% in most states. You’ll also get formal behind-the-wheel instruction from someone who isn’t your parent (which tends to go smoother for everyone). Programs typically cost $200 to $600.
Don’t lose track of your hours
Moda records every practice session. Time, conditions, day or night. It runs a tally against what Nebraska requires and builds the DMV form for you. Beats a spreadsheet.
