Do You Need Driver's Ed in New Jersey?

Nope. New Jersey has no driver’s ed requirement on the books. You’re free to learn entirely through supervised practice with a parent or guardian.

What New Jersey does require

No driver’s ed, but you still need 50 supervised driving hours (10 at night) to qualify for your license. A parent or guardian (age 21+) must be in the car for every session. You can start logging hours at age 16.

Full requirements: New Jersey permit hours.

Is it still worth taking?

Probably. Insurance companies knock 5% to 15% off premiums for teens who finish a certified course. A $400 driver’s ed class can save you more than that in the first year alone. Plus, professional instructors teach defensive driving techniques that most parents don’t think to cover.
