South Dakota Driver's Ed: Required or Optional?

Driver’s ed isn’t required in South Dakota. You can go straight to the permit process without taking a formal course.

What you do need

Skip the classroom, but don’t skip practice. South Dakota requires 50 supervised hours (10 at night) before you can take your road test. You’ll need a licensed adult who’s at least 21 riding shotgun.

Here’s the complete South Dakota hour guide.

Why families still take driver’s ed

Even without a legal mandate, a driver’s ed course can pay for itself. Insurance discounts for course completion range from 5% to 15% in most states. You’ll also get formal behind-the-wheel instruction from someone who isn’t your parent (which tends to go smoother for everyone). Programs typically cost $200 to $600.

What’s in the course

Classroom or online instruction covers traffic laws, sign recognition, and defensive driving principles. You’ll also learn about the consequences of DUI, texting while driving, and road rage. If the program includes in-car training, expect 6 to 10 hours behind the wheel with an instructor. Cost varies: $200 on the low end for online-only, up to $800 for programs with driving time included.

Don’t lose track of your hours

Moda records every practice session. Time, conditions, day or night. It runs a tally against what South Dakota requires and builds the DMV form for you. Beats a spreadsheet.
