What Counts as Night Driving in Texas?
Texas permit holders can drive at night with no curfew restriction. And 10 of your 30 required hours must happen after sunset. Night starts when the sun goes down, ends when it comes up, and it shifts by location and date throughout the year.
The math here is worth sitting with. Texas requires the fewest total hours of any state with a supervised practice requirement: just 30. But 10 of those have to be at night. That’s 33% of all your supervised practice after dark.
What Texas Calls “Night”
Texas ties night to actual sunset and sunrise times. No fixed clock. The sun drops below the horizon and night begins wherever you are.
In Dallas, sunset lands around 5:25 PM in December and moves to 8:35 PM in late June. Houston is similar. The same 7 PM drive counts as night in December and as day in July. On paper logs, this is the source of a lot of errors. Families estimate sunset or use a fixed assumption and end up with miscategorized hours.
No Permit Curfew
Texas doesn’t restrict when permit holders can drive. No nighttime cutoff, no window that’s off-limits. A licensed supervisor aged 21 or older in the seat is all you need, at any hour.
This is a real advantage. States like Oklahoma and Tennessee have curfews that match their night window, which creates logistics problems for accumulating night hours. Texas doesn’t have that problem. If you want to drive at 11 PM, you can.
Getting Your Night Hours Done
10 night hours out of 30 total. With 30 hours, there’s not much slack. You need to integrate night practice from the start, not treat it as an afterthought.
Winter accelerates this dramatically. Sunset before 5:30 PM in December means your after-school drives are already night sessions. A 5:45 PM drive to dinner in January counts. You can hit all 10 night hours without any schedule changes from November through February.
Summer is the other extreme. Sunset past 8:30 PM in Dallas means you need to specifically plan late sessions. With only 30 total hours to accumulate, you don’t have the cushion to fall behind on night hours early and catch up later.
Texas is enormous. Urban night driving in Houston or Dallas (dense traffic, freeway interchanges, parking lots, construction) looks nothing like night driving on a state highway in the Panhandle. Ideally, get time on both. Rural Texas at night is different: stretches with no overhead lighting, deer at the shoulder, and roads that require reading signs early because there’s nothing else to orient by.

Practical Tips
Driver’s ed is required in Texas. The classroom portion (at least 32 hours) is part of the licensing process, not optional. Complete it before or alongside your supervised driving hours.
10 out of 30 is a high ratio. Other states with 50 required hours can get away with cramming night hours late. You can’t do that with 30. Build night sessions into the first two weeks.
Check sunset for your city, not just a general guess. Dallas and El Paso differ by enough that the same date can mean different things. Moda checks your GPS location per session, so you don’t need to look it up.
Highway practice matters in Texas. The state has more highway miles than any other. Night freeway driving (merging, lane changes at speed, managing following distance in the dark) is something most teens need dedicated time on.
The 6-month hold is a firm minimum. Complete your 30 hours early if you can; you’re still waiting on the clock.
