How Many Driving Hours Do You Need in the Northern Territory?
The Northern Territory is the only jurisdiction in Australia with no mandatory logbook hours. Zero required daytime hours, zero required night hours. But that doesn’t mean you should skip practice — you still need to pass a practical driving test, and that test doesn’t get easier just because the territory didn’t make you log hours beforehand.
Northern Territory permit requirements at a glance
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Total supervised hours | None required |
| Night hours | None required |
| Minimum learner age | 16 |
| Minimum hold period | 6 months |
| Supervisor requirement | Full licence holder |
| Driver education required | No |
| Blood alcohol limit | Zero |
Why practice still matters
No logbook requirement doesn’t mean no practice needed. The NT practical test covers the same skills as any other state: parking, lane changes, roundabouts, hazard response, general road awareness. Examiners can tell when someone hasn’t put in the time.
Think of it this way. Other states set the bar at 50 to 120 hours for a reason. That’s how long it takes most learners to build the skills they need. The NT just trusts you to figure out how much practice you need on your own.
How much practice should you do?
Even though it’s not required, aim for at least 50 hours of supervised driving before your test. That’s the minimum other states require, and there’s good research behind it. More hours means fewer crashes in the first year of solo driving.
| Approach | Hours | Sessions per week | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum recommended | 50 | 3-4 | ~13-17 weeks |
| Solid preparation | 80 | 4-5 | ~16-20 weeks |
| Thorough | 100+ | 5 | ~20+ weeks |
Include a mix of conditions: daytime, night, wet roads, busy intersections, highways, quiet streets. The more variety, the better prepared you’ll be.
Night driving practice
There’s no formal requirement for night hours, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice to skip it. Driving in darkness is a different skill. Headlight glare, reduced visibility, fatigue, and different traffic patterns all require practice.
Aim for at least 10 hours at night. In Darwin, sunset ranges from about 6:00 PM in June to 7:15 PM in December. The tropical location means less seasonal variation than southern states, but the early onset of darkness in the dry season still gives you plenty of evening practice windows.
Supervisor requirements
Your supervisor must hold a full licence and sit in the front passenger seat. They need to stay alert and be ready to take control at any time. Zero blood alcohol for the learner.
Without a logbook system, there’s no formal validation of who supervised your driving. But the point of a supervisor isn’t paperwork — it’s safety. Drive with someone experienced who can genuinely help you improve.
Speed restrictions
The NT famously had unrestricted speed zones until 2007, and some sections of the Stuart Highway still have a 130 km/h limit. As a learner, use common sense. Build up to higher speeds gradually. Start on quiet suburban streets, progress to busier roads, then tackle highways when you’re confident.
Tracking your driving hours
Just because the NT doesn’t require a logbook doesn’t mean tracking is pointless. Keeping a record of your practice helps you spot gaps. Never driven in rain? Only practised on weekends? Haven’t tried highway merging yet? A log makes those gaps obvious.
Moda tracks every drive automatically — day and night hours, distance, conditions. Even without a formal requirement, having a clear picture of your experience builds confidence heading into the practical test.
Does the Northern Territory require supervised driving hours?
No. The NT doesn’t have a mandatory logbook hour requirement. However, practice is strongly recommended before attempting the practical test.
How old do you have to be to get a learner licence in the NT?
You can apply for a learner licence in the Northern Territory at age 16.
Who can supervise a learner driver in the NT?
Your supervisor must hold a full licence and sit in the front passenger seat. They need to be ready to take control at any time.
Is night driving practice required in the Northern Territory?
No. There’s no formal night driving requirement. But night conditions are different from daytime, and you should practice in darkness before attempting your test.
How long do I need to hold my learner licence in the NT?
You must hold your learner licence for at least 6 months before you can sit the practical driving test.
Should I still track my driving hours in the NT?
Definitely. Even without a mandatory requirement, tracking your practice helps you identify gaps in your experience and gives you confidence going into the test.
