How Many Driving Hours Do You Need in Queensland?
Queensland requires 100 supervised hours before you can go from your Ls to your Ps. 10 at night, 90 during the day. It’s less than NSW and Victoria, and the instructor bonus can cut it down further.

Night driving rules in Queensland
Night driving counts from sunset to sunrise. Queensland’s position closer to the equator means less seasonal variation than southern states — but there’s still a swing. In Brisbane, sunset ranges from about 5:00 PM in June to 6:45 PM in December. Further north in Cairns or Townsville, the variation is even smaller.
10 hours of night driving is manageable. That’s roughly 10 sessions at an hour each. Start mixing them in early so they don’t pile up at the end.
Supervisor requirements
Your supervisor must hold an open (full) licence and have held it for at least 1 year. Provisional licence holders can’t supervise. The supervisor sits in the front passenger seat, stays alert, and must be ready to take over.
Zero blood alcohol for the learner. Supervisors should also stay well under the limit — practically, just don’t drink before supervising.
Instructor bonus hours
Queensland offers a 3-for-1 bonus with licensed driving instructors. Each instructor hour counts as 3 in your logbook. The cap is 10 instructor hours, giving you 30 hours of credit.
That drops your actual driving time from 100 hours to about 80. Combined with the night hours you’d be doing anyway, this is a meaningful shortcut.
Logbook submission timing
Here’s something that catches people off guard: you need to submit your completed logbook at least 12 business days before your practical test. Not the day of. Not the week before. 12 business days. That’s roughly 2.5 weeks.
Plan accordingly. Finish your hours with a buffer, submit the logbook, then book your test for a date that gives Transport and Main Roads time to process it.
How to plan your 100 hours
You need to hold your learner licence for 12 months. Spreading the hours across that time makes it painless:
| Timeline | Sessions per week | Session length | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relaxed (34 weeks) | 3 | 1 hour | ~34 weeks |
| Moderate (20 weeks) | 5 | 1 hour | ~20 weeks |
| With instructor bonus (16 weeks) | 5 | 1 hour | ~16 weeks |
The “with instructor bonus” row assumes you max out the 3-for-1 (10 instructor hours = 30 credit), bringing your actual required hours down to about 80.
Night hours are 10% of the total. One evening session every couple of weeks from the start is all you need.
Age exemptions
If you’re 25 or older when you get your learner licence, you’re exempt from the 100-hour logbook requirement. You still need the minimum hold period and have to pass the practical test, but the logbook isn’t required.
Tracking your driving hours
Keeping a paper logbook accurate across 100 hours is tedious. Forget one session and you’re guessing. Moda logs every drive automatically, separates day and night hours, tracks your instructor bonus, and shows your progress in real time. When it’s time to submit, export your logbook in the format Queensland requires — and do it at least 12 business days before your test.
